Let there be Light!

I really am trying to get back on the blog more, while I can. So for Christmas I received a new umbrella lighting setup! It is always entertaining when people who are not into photography ask me what I get and I reply with an umbrella. The look of confusion on their face is always very humorous to me, especially when they look at me and say"...an umbrella?"

Of course I explain to them that it is a flash umbrella that is used to diffuse the light spill onto a subject, thus creating a softer feel. What I enjoy about this Westcott umbrella is that it is not just a shoot through softbox, but it also has a reflective black cover you can ad to make it a bounce (as seen in the photo below).

I hope everybody had a great Christmas and I will try to keep you up to date to the new year!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all three of my readers! I hope you have a very safe and happy holidays. I know I keep saying it over and over, but soon I will update more often. Just as soon as my life decides to settle down!

Day 307 - Homage to Mad Men

I got a suit! You can not really see exactly how awesome it is in this photo, but as soon as I got it I knew exactly what I had to do. This image here is a homage to the opening credits to a TV series known as Mad Men. If you have no idea what I am talking about go here -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcRr-Fb5xQo

Now of course this is not a graphical representation of myself in my suit, but if I were to do it exactly how they did it wouldn't be mine now would it? Let me know what you think and if your a fan of the show let me know that too!

Ideas for the Summer - A Reminder to Myself

I have been looking at many different styles of photography lately and I am getting more into portraits that I have been in the past. I think it was sparked by the series of self-portraits that I did over the summer, but now I really want to get more involved with others as well. One specific style of portrait photography I would love to get into is Underwater Portraits." It is very unique and there is almost no way to get the same shot more than once. Now the title of this post might make sense, I will have to wait for the summer time in order to try this out.

The biggest problem in doing this is the cost of one of a water housing. They start at $1,200 and that might not even be one you can trust! I guess it is something to think about over the next six months as I enjoy the lack of colors that is a winter in Houston, Texas.

Day 306 - The Clock Tower

Just went on a photo shoot in downtown Houston in the Market District to capture this clock tower. This is a HDR panoramic shot of the tower, just below the base. I haven't got a chance to take many HDRs, let alone a panoramic, lately so I thought this would be a fun time to do it. I think it turned out pretty cool!

Hi (Poster)

I don't know where it came from, but I have suddenly had the urge to start doing poster designs. I know, its really random, but it seems like fun. I want to try to knock one out every week if I can and just try to accomplish a few different things.

This poster is something I thought up while driving back from Austin this last weekend. I actually pulled over and drew out the letters h and i together like they are in the poster, just so I would not forget. Typography is something that I started to get really interested in the last year and I have been meaning to do more with it. For this poster I wanted it to look almost like a giant pixelated graphic and I think I was able to accomplish that. That is probably thanks to the hours of Minecraft I have been playing.

Overall, I just wanted to produce a nice, clean typographic poster that might make people take a second look at because they don't necessarily know what it is the first time. What do you think?

Day 232 - Old House

I went camping this weekend with Catherine and Carolyn. It was really a lot of fun and I got to see quite a bit along the way. Below are the four pictures I chose to show off this weekend with!

Day 293 - Haunter!

I am so far behind right now it isn't even funny! I have been so busy finishing up school and trying to get things settled for afterwards that this has kinda taken the back seat. I am going to try my hardest to catch up in the next week and hopefully I can do so. So until next time here is my pumpkin from Halloween. Its Haunter! It is one of the original 151 Pokemon from way back in the day.

Day 278 - Dinner Party

I had the privilege to attend a dinner party hosted by one of my very good friends, Jena, Friday night. It was in celebration of her birthday and it was quite a good time. It was nothing bit, just a few friends to enjoy the night together. She set up an outdoor dining experience complete with hundreds of candles in tiny paper cups, it was really quite a site to see. It is a good thing that I had my 50mm lens with me or I probably would have annoyed people even more than I already did!

Day 277 - Number 20

Number 20, even though I know his real name, seems to always be in many of my photos. As a part time sports photographer I was taught to follow the ball or action of the game and when that happens you seem to capture the featured players of the game. Number 20 always seems to be one of these players, but it is always easy to catch a running back in action.

Day 277 - Number 20, originally uploaded by griffithgreg.

Day 276 - The Lights

Every day when I go and come from class I walk by these lights hanging on the wall and ceiling of the building. I don't know why, but I have always been fascinated by how they were laid out in a diamond pattern rather than just a line. Really I guess you could say they where in a line, just that line is just skewed off at an angle. Either way, I have always wanted to stop and photograph them and I figured this would be a good day to do so.

Day 275 - Polka Dot Glass

Here is an idea I have been wanting to try for a while. I originally found the idea online at diyphotography.net and thought it looked really fun and unique. Here is one of my favorite results from the time I shot this photograph.

Day 274 - Natures Comeback #3

I went out shooting today and really everything is dying right about now. The weather is changing to fall and you can definitely tell winter is on its way. Thats one of the funny things about southern Texas, there is no transition from summer to the dead of winter, it just hits like a ton of bricks. No fall colors at all, just brown and black it seems. Here is a photo that I took that fights the death of nature a little bit and I really wanted to emphasize the wood behind it and make it an edgy dark atmosphere, to kind of represent the fall.

Day 273 - Loony

I have not done a photo that really involved me in a little while (not counting my studio shot), so I decided to go out to the park and enjoy the nice weather and come up with something fun as a self portrait. This is what I came up with...kind of a loonytoons style photograph where I start looking around one tree and end up at another, not much to it.

Day 272 - Special Olympics

I went and shot the Special Olympics swim meet Saturday and this was one of my favorite from the thousand that I took. It was very fun to get to see the kids get to participate in an event like this and to see how much they enjoyed it. If you check gregg.smugmug.com tomorrow, then you should be able to see the rest of the photographs that I took from the event.

Day 269 - HTexas

What a week it has been for my photography. First I got my smugmug site started and then I was published for the first time in UHCL's Bayousphere. Well today I got the latest issue of HTexas and guess what, I was published again! Well if you consider "Greg Griffin" me...yeah, my last name was misspelled in the issue, at least I got another photograph in print. If you are able to find an issue of the latest HTexas, flip it to the back (very last page) and there you will find my photograph.

Day 269 - HTexas, originally uploaded by griffithgreg.

Day 268 - Bayousphere

So I am officially a published photographer. It only took a year, but I made it happen within that. So the University of Houston - Clear Lake puts out this magazine once maybe twice a year called Bayousphere. It is a "literary arts magazine" and this year I submitted a few photographs to try and get in. They chose my "Untitled" photograph that I won first place for during the AIDs awareness art show. So if you are around UHCL and pick up a copy, be sure to flip near the back and find my photograph!

Day 267 - Greg G Photography

Ok, so I know that I have been slow with updates, but I promise I am still taking photographs and they will be posted. I have been very busy updating my resume, website and preparing another site of mine you can find at gregg.smugmug.com. This website specializes in sports photography, mostly for Friendswood sports. Here I can post the photographs I take of the events and sell them online. For these as well I have decided to give back to the Special Olympics by donating a portion of the profits to their organization. So go check it out and if you happen to know someone who plays a sport in Friendswood and needs me to shoot it let me know!

Day 266 - Mossy Tiles

The nice days continue and again I went out to my backyard looking for something new to photograph. I managed to find some awesome moss growing on top of an old playhouse that was built for my sister years ago. I thought it made for a good quick shot.

Day 265 - Fetch!

It has been so nice outside these last few days I went out in my backyard with my camera with Abby. She was in a crazy mood and kept looking at me waiting to do something. So I found a big stick and threw it, quickly enough she ran after it running back. It was really fun to try and throw the stick then get down to grab a shot of her running back and since it was so bright outside it was not hard at all to capture a high frame rate photograph.

Day 265 - Fetch!, originally uploaded by griffithgreg.

Day 264 - Studio Self Portrait

Studio self portrait...how fake does this look?!? I am usually not a huge fan of these studio portraits so I tried to make it as comfortable for myself as possible. I didnt want to do anything typical and I just tried to be myself. I feel like it makes my head look really tiny...anywho. The background came out quite grey on these shots and I know why, I really need to start amping up the light hitting the background. That way when the camera see's the shot it thinks the background is over lit and therefor makes it as white as the snow. Really these shots where not only for my website, but to test how well I could light a subject in studio. I think it came out fairly well, You can definitely tell where the stronger of the three lights are, but the more I do it the better.

Day 264 - Studio Self Portrait, originally uploaded by griffithgreg.

Day 263 - Lighting Studio

Ok, so I went off to the UHCL lighting studio to attempt a few self portraits for my website. I will have to post one of the final images tomorrow as a 365. For today, I just wanted to show what exactly the studio was like. It has a massive (what I think is) a 60in soft box going softening the strobe as well as a smaller 30in (again guessing) softbox and a good 3x1foot soft box for all your shooting needs. I set up the white sheet to try and get a seemless white background, but it came out quite grey for some reason. Until tomorrow!

Day 261 - Green Thing

I recently read an article online about light painting orbs and since I just did that abstract light photograph it made me want to try it out. My orbs never really turned into orbs and sadly enough this was the best I was able to get. I felt like it looked like a 3D green Pacman (who was originally named puckman...but that's a different story) or a neutron about to explode with all of its particles circling it as fast as possible. No matter what it looks like, I will have to try this again when the grass is not so wet and I have a better environment in which to do so.

Day 260 - Cake

Went on a photo shoot today at a bakery that specializes in wedding cakes for an editorial in the upcoming Texas Weddings. I didn't want to show off any of the full cakes until the issue comes out and that means you will be able to pick up an issue and see my photos in print! That will be really exciting. Not a whole lot going on here, I did get this one with my 430EXII on ETTL to help capture the details a little, but nothing fancy.

Day 259 - Abstract Light #2

Sorry photo's have been a little lagging the last week. I have been crazy busy with rebuilding my website and other things in that nature. Today's photo I went back to something a little more abstract using light. I really like taking these because you never know what you are going to get and it just makes it a lot of fun. Taken with my Canon 50mm f/1.4.

Day 258 - Logitech Performance MX

I have been using the same Logitech micro usb mouse for almost three years and I have noticed that it is starting to fail me on my wooden desk. So I decided to upgrade to the Logitech Performance Mouse MX. This mouse is capable of working on not only my wooden desk, but even a glass surface if I really wanted it to. It's design is new to me, almost like some kind of weird spaceship, but it works like a charm on my desk and I am able to design without worrying about bad feedback from it.

Day 255 - Downtown Austin

Went into Austin today to suprise Catherine for her birthday. Because of it being such a quick trip I did not even think to bring my camera...which in all honesty violates rule number one of photography, always have your camera. Some people say that the best camera is the one you have with you, that is exactly what I had to go with today. Using my LG VU as my camera for today's photo, I snapped this shot as I waited at a light in downtown Austin.

Day 254 - Hellenic Greek Orthodox Church

I am in a HDR mood this week obviously and this is a photograph I have been wanting to show for a while. Granted it was not taken today, I felt like I could finally release this out since it is not being used for its original purpose. I shot a series of this church and this is one of my favorites, especially since it is a hand held HDR. Photomatix sure does a great job of aligning those shots up. This is just a basic 3 shot HDR from -2 to 2, nothing to fancy. Maybe I will keep the HDR photos going the rest of the week...I seem to have forgotten about them lately.

Day 252 - Southwestern University

After visiting a dog park in Georgetown, we decided to stop by, from what I learned, the original University of Texas...now known as Southwestern University. It was a beautiful campus and even though it was small, I was very impressed by everything I saw. The only draw back to this visit was how brutally hot it was outside, but that has nothing to do with the school and everything to do with Texas in early September.

Day 251 - UT vs some MWC team...

Catherine received a couple of tickets to the UT football game today, and being the sports fan that I am I could not pass up a football game...no matter who was playing. I am always skeptical about where I can take my camera, especially since it is a DSLR I am afraid people will not allow me to bring it in to certain venues. So for this photograph I used my cell phone to try and capture the pre-game atmosphere of the UT stadium. One thing I really liked about this photograph is the sun rays beating down on us, which shows off very well how hot it was before it set behind the stands.

Day 250 - Guiness Cupcakes

I arrived in Austin today to start celebrating Catherine's birthday! Her birthday is not really until Wednesday, but I thought it would be fun to come up and visit her the weekend before. To help celebrate, she decided to bake some Guinness and Irish Cream cupcakes with a recipe she found from a website called smittenkitchen.com. Go and take a look at the recipe and if you get a chance try them out, they are some of the most delicious cupcakes I have ever had!

Day 249 - Touchdown Mustangs!

Second game of my little brothers I have been able to attend and photograph. Today's photo is one I am actually surprised I was able to catch because of how close he actually was to me. I was standing just past the goal line when I took this shot and had to quickly zoom out to 70mm with my 70-200mm lens. What is even more impressive is that it is actually a frozen image, when I was shooting at 1/320 that usually does not happen. I had to shoot this slow because the lighting at this stadium was very poor, actually worse that it was the week before at the last game.

The Friendswood JV team ended up winning the game 21-14 because of a game winning drive at the end of the game. I am hoping to catch a few varsity games when they are finally able to play home. So be on the lookout for more football pictures the rest of the year!

Day 247 - Guitar from up top

I am going to admit...it is getting really hard to stay on top of this 365. Even now, I think I am actually two days behind and I really need to catch up. Ideas are starting to run low, which is one reason I think it is getting hard to do...actually thats the only reason. Anyway, I wanted to try something a little different and go for a semi-extreme angle. I set my camera up on my tripod as high as it would go. I then found three bar-stools from my house and put the tripod on top of that. Overall I think the camera was about 10 feet in the air...it made me very nervous.

I had it set to manual mode at 1/250 of a second with my flash mounted up top at ETTL -1 @ 24mm. The camera was also set to f/22, which is extremely high for something I would normally do, but it seemed to get the lighting just how I wanted it and I think the final product turned out pretty good. Not bad for a 15 minute photo shoot is it?

Day 245 - Mad Men

I recently stumbled upon the AMC TV show Mad Men and decided to pick up the first season to watch. It is quite the TV drama and I really am enjoying it so far. It seems like every episode they go through 10 packs of cigarettes and 5 bottles of whiskey. Other than that it is very interesting that they based a show on a group of advertising guru's in New York City. Another thing that I find very odd is that it is currently running it's fourth season and I am just now starting to hear about it...I guess thats what happens when you don't watch a lot of television.

Day 244 - Thomas

Went out to the park with Thomas today and helped him do some of his photography homework. After we lost all the light he needed to shoot with this film camera, it was time for me to bust out my 40D and speedlight to get some fun shots in. I love bokeh and no matter what people say about it, I believe it brings a lot to a photo and helps give it atmosphere.

Day 243 - Number 53

So I went out to see my brother Troy's second football game this season. It was pretty exciting to see and get to shoot. The only problem was that they were playing at a school with some of the worst stadium lighting I have ever seen. Even with my ISO at 1600 and my aperture at 2.8 I was still only able to shoot at about 1/100 of a second. This made many of my shots very blurry and made it where I could only catch moments after amazing plays such as this one. Number 53 is Troy and this shot was taken just after he had sacked the QB in the 4th quarter. Throughout the game he also managed to score a touchdown by pounding it in as well as recover a fumble. Hopefully next time I go shoot his game it will be in a stadium with better lighting, but either way the shots that turned out were worth it.

Day 239 - Bling Bling

From the look at my eyes, you might be able to tell how tired I am now that I am back from Pennsylvania. What I wanted to show in my photo today was the collection of pins I managed to get while gone this weekend. Apparently while out at this event and others like it, they trade pins, each representing something a little different. One of my favorite is the green circle on the right side. It was traded to me by the security guards when we were going through the metal detectors. Everybody seems to have a pin, but the hard part is, most don't have them hanging around their neck...they have them filling books! Either way, I am exhausted from this weekend and I am getting some sleep.

Day 238 - Photographing the LLWS

Playing at Volunteer stadium, the kids really had a blast getting to play in front of a crowd, the size of which they have never seen. They played just before the International Championship was set to start so as people were coming in for that, they were able to catch a glimpse of our game as well.

For me it was really fun to get to photograph the game for everybody and just see how much fun the kids were having. Hopefully it helps spread the word about these kids and shows everybody they can do just about anything.

Day 235 - Yo Yo

I saw a video online the other day of the world champion Yo-Yo-er (sp?). It made me want to get out my Yo-Yo again and see what all I could remember...lets just say it was nothing compared to what he did. Anyway, because of this video I got the idea to try and capture the Yo-Yo while I was doing a forward pass with it. So I set up my camera and added the flash, then took out another tripod of mine to set up in the area that I thought the Yo-Yo would end up at the end of the string. After a few practice throws I started snapping pictures using a 10 second timer.

It took just under 20 takes to get two decent shots where it appeared frozen in time. The reason I picked this one is because you can see the string still a little loose just below to the right of the Yo-Yo. I thought that added a little more to the photo. It would be really cool to get to try some super high speed shots with a really good Yo-Yo-er, just to see what those look like.

Day 234 - Palm Calender

Really struggling for ideas lately. I have heard that when one does a 365 project that days 200-300 are definitely the hardest. Tack that on top of working and school and I can totally agree with that. Other than that, today's photo is nothing special. I know what many of you are probably asking yourself...OMG how did he photoshop that date on there so awesomely?! It's actually written on there with a sharpie. I know, really hard to believe, it takes a lot of work for your handwriting to look that bad. Well, off to think of awesome ideas for tomorrows photo!

Day 233 - Montage

This photo was something that I did not really give much thought to. I needed a photograph and the weather is crappy outside so I decided to do something a little different. This montage self-portrait consists of 15 photographs that I placed as I felt fit in Photoshop to create myself. Not one photograph actually has a full picture of my face, that way I knew I would get the blotted multi-photo look I wanted.

I don't know why but it reminds me of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button posters with brad pit, it must be that really weird expression on my face. It's kind of like I don't know why I am staring at a flash a foot in front of my face, I know I will be blind when its over. Well, I hope you enjoy this off beat photo for today!

Day 232 - Alohomora

So today I noticed my numbering's were completely off. Some time in the last 100 photographs I managed to type a 5 instead of a 4 and it just through everything into a frenzy, but everything is in order now so on to the photograph.

I started re-reading a few of the Harry Potter books the other day and currently I am actually on "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." It has been over 3 years since I finished Deathly Hallows for the first time and with the movie coming up I figured it would be a good time to read it for the third time. It is funny how many details I have forgotten about the series since I completed it. Especially things like Fleur and Bill getting married, they have not mentioned that once in the films. Just goes to show you the book is usually better than the film.

Day 241 - Leaning

What is with portraiture and leaning against walls? I don't think there is a photographer out there who hasn't taken a shot similar to this. I was really in the mood to shoot a portrait like this, well really in any way, but this is the first that happened upon itself. Anyway, just a quick shot I took while driving around scouting locations for a few future shoots and I found this wooden wall which seemed like a good leaner wall. This was also the first time I attempted to use my flash as a filler rather than a main source of light. The original image made my right side very dark because of the sun, but with the flash dialed down 2 on ETTL mode, it filled it in rather nicely.
